MASTER OF SCIENCE

The Master of Science is a two-year full-time program providing graduates with the opportunity to undertake advanced study and research. This program is designed to provide you with a thorough training in applied scientific research and methodology and will also prepare you for higher degree studies and professional employment. The program consists of both theoretical and practical coursework, as well as a research dissertation. You will complete advanced coursework prior to completing the research component.

The coursework will provide a critical evaluation of research and presentation, develop your knowledge and understanding of statistical analyses techniques as applied to scientific research, and develop an awareness of research proposal design and background. You will have the opportunity to develop a research proposal including aims, methodology and a literature review.

You will undertake a major research project under the supervision of one of our leading researchers. The program has ten different majors aligned to the discipline strengths of the School, including Applied Mathematics, Archaeological Science, Biomedical Science, Bioscience, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Food Security, Forensic Science, Marine Science and Physics.

The degree will be assessed through coursework, research project performance, thesis and seminar.

Industry and expert connections

Griffith has a proud history of leading the way across scientific research. As a student of the Master of Science, you'll have access to leading experts from a range of respected University research centres, including the Australian Research Centre for Human Evolution (ARCHE), the Australian Rivers Institute (ARI), the Centre for Quantum Dynamics (CQD), the Cities Research Institute (CRI), the Environmental Futures Research Institute (EFRI), the Griffith Institute for Drug Discovery (GRIDD), the Institute of Glycomics, the Menzies Health Institute Queensland (MHIQ) and the Queensland Micro and Nanotechnology Centre (QMNC).

Attendance information

This program is offered full-time. Coursework is undertaken on-campus and the research project can be undertaken on or off-campus.

Pathways to further study

Students who successfully complete the Master of Science program at the required level will be eligible to apply for entry to Doctoral Research programs.

Changing programs

If an International student changes to a different program they will be subject to the approved program fee for the trimester in which they are enrolled.

Permanent resident status

If an undergraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will be provided with a domestic fee-paying place.

The student may then apply for a Commonwealth supported place at the next admission period provided that the student satisfies the conditions for transfer from a domestic fee-paying place to a Commonwealth supported place as set out in the Undergraduate Programs Admission Policy.

If a postgraduate student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth supported place (subject to availability) or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.

If a research student obtains permanent resident status in Australia after commencing study in a program, and the student can provide evidence of permanent resident status prior to the census date (of the trimester in which they are enrolled), the student will automatically be considered for a Commonwealth Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset or a domestic fee-paying place as applicable for the program.

My career opportunities
