The ability to communicate in other languages will help you in almost any career. You can study the Diploma of Languages along with your Bachelor degree. With this option, you will be able to continue learning a language taken at school or start a new language as a beginner while also gaining a separate second degree in another area. Alternatively, you can study only the Diploma of Languages if you are not enrolled in any degree at Griffith University (this option is not available to International students studying on a student visa).

Languages

You can specialise in one of the following languages at either the Gold Coast or Nathan campus:

  • Chinese
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Spanish.

Note: Applicants seeking admission into the Diploma of Languages for Trimester 2 must be able to provide evidence that they have sufficient proficiency in their chosen language to commence mid-year. Applications for Trimester 2 entry require approval from the Program Director who will assess that a student's proficiency is suitable for mid-year admission to this program.

The Diploma of Languages is offered over a minimum of 2 years part-time.

Attendance information

The Diploma of Languages is offered on campus at the Nathan and Gold Coast campuses. The Diploma can be undertaken as a single part-time program or full-time in conjunction with a Griffith University degree program.

Language streams

The language stream is compulsory for all students in this program and must be completed in one language. Students with prior knowledge of the language are required to have a placement assessment prior to enrolling. Students must undertake a language stream in a language in which they are not native speakers.

All four language streams, Chinese, Italian, Japanese and Spanish are available at Nathan campus. The Japanese and Spanish streams are available at the Gold Coast campus. Some courses in the Chinese and Italian streams are available at the Gold Coast campus but where courses are not on offer students wishing to undertake these streams will have to travel to the Nathan campus.

Students concurrently enrolled in the Diploma of Languages and a Bachelor degree wishing to enrol in greater than 50 credit points per trimester must have a trimester GPA of 5.0 in both programs. Approval from the Diploma of Languages Program Director is required. The Diploma of Languages Program Director may consult the Program Director for the Bachelor degree in making a decision.

Students who have completed a Year 11 and 12 language study should enrol in a second year course. If you are unsure of the course in which to enrol please contact the Language Convenor.

Students undertaking the Diploma on its own will be classed as part-time, because they will be enrolled in fewer than 30 credit points per trimester.

International students are able to undertake the Diploma of Languages in conjunction with a CRICOS registered degree program providing they maintain full-time enrolment in their primary degree of study, and continue to progress academically.

Classes may be scheduled during the day and evening throughout the week.

Trimester 1 or 2 intake is dependent upon entry proficiency.

Note: Language learning is demanding and within each language course you will need to maintain a constant level of class participation and outside-class study and practice throughout the trimester. If you take the Diploma of Languages in conjunction with a degree program, we encourage you to seek advice when planning your study load by consulting the Program Director of the Diploma of Languages and the Program Director of your degree program.

If you are an International student on a student visa, you must ensure that you enrol in a way that will allow you to complete your enrolment within the expected program duration as stated on your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).
