Law Clerk
A Law Clerk is an indispensable part of the legal system in Ontario. Law Clerks are employed by lawyers, law firms, or governmental agencies, under the supervision and guidance of a lawyer to perform duties of an administrative or managerial nature, or specifically-delegated substantive legal work, which requires training in legal concepts.
The role of the Law Clerk includes interviewing clients and witnesses, engaging in preliminary legal research, maintaining corporate documents and filings, drafting documents and correspondence, compiling evidence, preparing briefs for adjudicative bodies, and more
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS GAINED
The program is designed to develop expertise for a variety of areas of legal practice. Students learn about civil litigation, real estate law, corporate and criminal law, family law, and wills and estates. Students also develop skills with legal software applications, which aids them in their legal and business communication, as well as with document preparation and research. Students also have an introduction to accounting, to learn the role of law clerks with client trust accounts, billing accounts and invoicing, towards building or managing a financially sound legal practice. Graduates develop client service strategies and practice professional standards and ethics from the Law Society of Ontario by following their rules and guidelines.
