Architecture - Design for the Built Environment

SRH University (formerly SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences and others now integrated into SRH University of Applied Sciences Heidelberg) is a private, state-recognized institution with ~18 modern campuses across Germany. It offers practical, international-oriented programmes in fields including engineering, business, computing, design and architecture. The university places emphasis on hands-on learning, small groups, and the CORE principle (competence-oriented education).

Why Study Architecture – Design for the Built Environment

Architecture is central to designing the spaces we live, work and move in — and this programme focuses on sustainable, culturally sensitive, and innovative design for real-world challenges, such as climate change, urban renewal and heritage preservation. You’ll gain both creative design skills and technical understanding to shape cities and buildings of the future.

Programme Structure / Subjects / Topics

The curriculum is interdisciplinary and focused on practical architectural design, sustainability, urban contexts, theory and spatial analysis:

Typical Areas of Study

1st Semester

  • Architectural Theory

  • Design and Building Construction I + II

  • Urban Analysis and Representation

These modules help develop design thinking, technical understanding and conceptual skills.

2nd Semester

  • Analysis of the Existing Built Fabric

  • Design in Existing Fabric

  • Building Construction in Existing Fabric

  • Elective options

You engage with real contexts and develop in-depth architectural projects.

3rd Semester

  • Master’s Thesis (major research/design project)

  • Colloquium

The final thesis enables deep exploration of a design or research topic.

Disciplines or Specialisations

While the M.A. in Architecture itself is a defined programme, you typically work across the following core architecture domains:

  • Architectural design and conceptualisation
  • Urban and spatial analysis
  • Historic context and built environment adaptation
  • Sustainable design strategies
  • Construction and technical systems awareness
  • Elective modules for specialised interests (varies by campus)

Highlights of the Programme

  • English-taught, internationally focused learning environment.
  • Studio-based architectural training with design practice at its core.
  • Strong emphasis on sustainability, urban context and real-world challenges.
  • CORE learning principle — structured, modular, project-based pedagogy.
  • Diverse campus network allows potential mobility (e.g., Heidelberg, Hamburg, Munich).

Career Outcomes

Graduates of this Master’s programme often pursue careers such as:

  • Architect / Architectural Designer
  • Urban Planner / Urban Designer
  • Sustainability Consultant in Built Environment
  • Project Manager in Architecture & Construction
  • Design Researcher / Academic Pathways
  • Consultant for Cultural Heritage and Adaptive Reuse

Visa & Immigration Requirements (International Students)

If you are a non-EU/EEA student (e.g., from India):

  • You must apply for a German student visa at your local German embassy/consulate before travelling.

Required documents typically include:
