Mathematics for Education

In the Mathematics for Education program, you will combine mathematics and education to develop a wide perspective on the teaching and learning of mathematics. You will become well prepared for a rewarding career in mathematics education and find yourself in demand in a market with an ongoing shortage of qualified mathematics teachers.

You will receive a BA or a BSc Honours degree, and you can complete your teacher qualification with a second degree of BEd (Bachelor of Education) either concurrently or consecutively.

What makes Mathematics for Education at York unique?

At York, you will be part of a small, tightly knit program in which you will develop the skills and knowledge of an effective mathematics educator. Your program will include small, group-based courses in which you can work closely with professors and your fellow students. You can participate in the work of our vibrant Teaching Stream Faculty on research and development in mathematics education and gain valuable research and teaching experience. Recent students have worked on projects like Supplemental Instruction, the First-Year Experience, Flipped Assessments, Partially Populated Lecture Notes, Peer Leadership, Mathematics and Art, and many others. You can take a course on Experiential Education, and get teaching experience by participating in 1st year courses in Mathematics and Statistics as a tutor and study groups facilitator, and then reflecting upon your experience for course credit.

You can get a Bachelor of Arts Honours (BA Hons), Bachelor of Science Honours (BSc Hons), Bachelor of Arts Specialized Honours (BA Spec. Hons), or Bachelor of Science Specialized Honours (BA Spec. Hons) degree in Mathematics for Education. An Honours Minor BA/BSc in Mathematics for Education is also possible.

  • In the BA program, you can take electives in areas like economics, business, psychology, or philosophy.
  • In the BSc program, you can take electives in areas like physics, astronomy, biology, or chemistry.

The Mathematics for Education program is flexible - you can do a second major or minor in another subject to gain depth and breadth of knowledge and experience.
