Pre-sessional Course

Students on this course will learn processing skills that will accelerate their knowledge of English to become fully functional in a University environment. Our course covers research skills, note-taking, referencing, critical thinking, academic writing, presentation skills.  Students will receive regular homework as part of a blended learning approach and learn skills for easily responding to test and exam questions.

 

Course Objectives

This course is designed for students aiming to improve their understanding and production of English for entry into a university programme.

 

All lessons on the pre-sessional are based on the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) From B2 to C1.

 

The C1 target objectives for each student are as follows

 

The student can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning, express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions, use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes, produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

 

On or before arrival all students will do a needs analysis, take an English language test, and then be placed in a class suitable for their level.

B1 / IELTS 4.5 equivalent - 24 weeks minimum

B1 / IELTS 5.0 - 12 weeks minimum

B2 / IELTS 5.5 – 8 weeks minimum

B2 / IELTS 6.0 – 6 weeks minimum

 

Students skills are assessed weekly for progress in grammar, vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, and speaking
