What you’ll learn
University of Colorado Denver's BA in Education and Human Development with a teaching license in English Language Arts expertly prepares you to teach English to adolescents from diverse backgrounds, languages, and cultures as they develop an appreciation for literature, writing and new media.
At CU Denver, you’ll learn from nationally and internationally recognized faculty members who are known for innovation and research in literacy and English education. These are your mentors! You’ll be surrounded by other committed, innovative and compassionate students who crave a deeper level of preparedness—one that will allow them to give their best to every student, every day.
You may be starting college for the first time, transferring from another institution, or returning to the university setting after years away. Regardless, you’ll join a top education school with collaborative teams of dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty who will prepare you for success in any classroom anywhere.
In this program you will:
- Learn to plan assessment-informed literacy instruction for educational excellence and equity for all children from a variety of racial, ethnic, socio-economic and ability levels.
- Develop deep understanding of the diverse ways children learn about literacy and develop within their families, communities and schools and learn skills to blend relevant and engaging curricula with your standards-based teaching methods.
- Gain the skills for necessary for effective classroom organization and management.
Many universities and colleges promise a teacher residency with experiential learning under a teacher mentor. Few can deliver one as well-supported and prepared as ours. For more than 25 years, we have been working closely with area schools to create a proven residency program that supports your development as you work with teams of dedicated practicing teachers, teacher leaders and university faculty in local schools. Further, because of our urban location and partnerships in rural settings across Colorado as well as our emphasis on teaching in diverse contexts, our graduates are ready to lead and make a difference in any middle school or high school classroom, in any district or context. Starting in your first year, you’ll be placed in a partner school to begin observations and real-world experiences in public schools. In your final year, these experiences culminate in a full-time student teaching residency where you can experience life as a teacher and begin to hone your craft as a professional educator.
