What you'll learn
Are you passionate about working with young children, infants through 8 years old, and their families and communities during this critically time in a human’s life? If so, the University of Colorado Denver’s four-year, 126-credit hour undergraduate Early Childhood Education program which leads to Colorado teacher licensure might be the right program for you. We prepare highly competent early childhood education professionals who are known for embracing the whole child in inclusive, culturally and linguistically diverse public school or community-based early childhood education settings. With this licensure, you will be eligible to teach in pre-K through grade three classrooms in the public schools or in infants through five year old community child care programs. Our program emphasizes family-centered practices, culturally sustaining teaching and is inspired by the potential of all children and families.
Some of students enter our BA program as freshman; others bring an associate degree from a community college which can articulate into our BA. Still others will bring professional development experiences that can sometimes be assessed for credit. Our experienced advisors can help figure out the right pathway for you.
At the University of Colorado Denver, you’ll learn from nationally and internationally recognized faculty members who emphasize inclusive, responsive practices and a curriculum that is inspired by the potential of all children and families. We are ranked as a top school according to U.S. News and World Report. Our graduates are known for thriving in inclusive, culturally and linguistically diverse ECE settings while engaging Colorado’s rapidly diversifying student and family population. We prepare highly competent teachers, leaders and advocates with the knowledge and skills to identify strengths and meet the needs of all children and their families. You’ll learn about young children’s thinking, culturally responsive education, supporting English language and learners and technology.
Students in the licensure program fulfill all the requirements for the Colorado department of education (CDE) license to teach children, birth through age eight, and the Colorado Human Services director qualification requirements to manage and direct early childhood public and private programs. The program emphasizes fieldwork and experiences that prepare our graduates to be responsive and innovative early childhood educators who practice within settings that include children with delays and/or disabilities.
CU Denver is committed to increasing the number of highly qualified and well-compensated early professionals in the field. We offer ECE scholarships and vast learning and development opportunities to support early childhood teachers and leaders. Our graduates work in a number of settings and in many roles including center directors, mentor teachers, educational coordinators, early childhood special educators, early childhood professional development coordinators and coaches, resource and referral staff members, home visitors and community college instructors.
You may be starting college for the first time, transferring from another institution, or returning to the university setting after years away. Regardless, you’ll join a top education school with collaborative teams of dedicated teachers and award-winning faculty who will prepare you for success in any classroom anywhere.
Many schools can promise a teacher residency, with experiential learning under a teacher mentor. Few can deliver one as well supported and prepared as ours. For more than 25 years, we have been working closely with area schools to create a proven residency program that supports your development as you work with teams of dedicated practicing teachers, teacher leaders and university faculty in the school. Further, because of our urban and rural locations and emphasis on teaching in diverse contexts, our graduates are ready to lead and make a difference in any Special Education classroom, in any district.
