MUSIC PERFORMANCE, PROFESSIONAL STUDIES GRADUATE CERTIFICATE

The certificate program is a one-year, sixteen credit program, designed to offer an intensive area of study for students who wish to focus their skills as performers.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

Students must have an earned undergraduate degree in music and must pass a highly competitive audition to be considered for the Professional Studies Certificate Program.  Students should contact the music enrollment coordinator at m.c.bill@csuohio.edu or (216) 687-5039 for detailed information.

CURRICULUM:

The curriculum for the Professional Studies Certificate Program includes specialized studies in specific instrument or vocal areas, culminating in a recital, as well as large and small ensemble performing experiences.

INSTRUMENTAL TRACK: STRING, BRASS, WOODWIND, PERCUSSION - 16 CREDITS

• MUA 6XX Applied study on major instrument, 2 credits
• MUA 603 - Recital Preparation
• MUA 606 - Repertoire
• MUS 632 - Solo Recital
• MUS 502 - Band/Wind Ensemble OR
• MUS 504 - University Orchestra OR
• MUS 507 - Jazz Ensemble 2 credits over 2 semesters
• MUS 506 - Chamber Ensemble two 1 credit sections
• Electives, 4 credits

KEYBOARD TRACK - 16 CREDITS

• MUA 611-612 Applied lessons, 2 credits
• MUA 603 - Recital Preparation
• MUS 632 - Solo Recital
• MUA 605 - Performance Pedagogy
• MUS 506 - Chamber Ensemble OR
• MUS 516 - Collaborative Piano and Accompanying any combination of three 1 credit courses
• MUS 576 - Extended Workshop (to be taken over two semesters)
• Electives, 3 credits

VOCAL TRACK - 16 CREDITS

• MUA 621-622 Applied lesson, 2 credits
• MUA 603 - Recital Preparation
• MUS 632 - Solo Recital
• MUA 605 - Performance Pedagogy OR
• MUA 606 - Repertoire
• MUS 508 - Opera Workshop
• MUS 501 - University Chorus OR
• MUS 505 - CSU Chorale
• Five elective credits: to be chosen from a foreign language, MUS 506 (Chamber Music), MUA 605 (Vocal Pedagogy), MUA 606 (Vocal Repertoire), MUS 501 (University Chorus), or MUS 505 (University Chorale)

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO ENROLL IN THE PROGRAM?

Any student who has earned a baccalaureate degree in music is eligible to audition for the program.  Students who have earned a graduate degree in music are eligible to pursue the certificate program as well.  A student who has received an undergraduate degree, but has not applied for a Master of Music degree, may use credits earned in this certificate program to be applied toward a Master of Music degree at a later time.
