DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICSRhodes Tower 1715 Phuong Ngo, Graduate Program Director INTRODUCTIONThe primary objective of the graduate program in economics is to develop economists who can meet the demand of the private sector, the not-for-profit sector, and government and are well trained in the tools of economic analysis and measurement. The program stresses a strong foundation in standard economic theory, econometric methods, and their application to problems faced by businesses, the not-for-profit sector, and government agencies. Although the Master of Arts in Economics is designed as a terminal degree program, students who complete the program are well prepared for further graduate study in economics. The program is aimed at students with an undergraduate degree in economics or business, as well as students with undergraduate training in other academic fields. Special strengths in research are in the areas of Labor Economics, International Economics, Macroeconomics, Growth and Development, Health Economics, Environmental and Energy Economics, Public Finance, Industrial Organization, Organization Theory, and Computational Economics. Assistants receive a stipend and tuition support. Contact the Department of Economics for graduate assistant application information. Two letters of recommendation are required. Other employment opportunities are available on campus. Applications for students seeking a graduate assistantship must be completed by May 1st. ADMISSION INFORMATIONTo be admitted as a Regular graduate student, the applicant must have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 2.75 grade-point average and have successfully completed courses in intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, calculus, and statistics. Students who do not meet these requirements are encouraged to take the requisite courses and/or consider the options described on Non-Degree Admission in this Catalog. International applicants must provide official TOEFL and GRE (general) test scores received directly from ETS. Students are advised to begin the program in the fall semester. DEGREE REQUIREMENTSThe MA in Economics program requires the completion of 30 credit hours. Students must complete 8 core courses for 24 credit hours. Students have the option of taking 6 hours of thesis research (ECN 699) or completing two approved elective courses. REQUIRED COURSES
ELECTIVESSelect two of the following approved courses for a total of six credits or complete 6 credit hours of thesis (ECN 699).
