To develop critical knowledge, skills and understanding of structural principles, evaluate the properties of materials and finishes; and their application to construction projects.

Construction Documentation

To enable the student to develop introductory graphical skills and knowledge to prepare design and construction documentation.

Environmental Impact

To enable the student to develop skills and knowledge to evaluate site and building limitations including environmental impacts and sustainable methods of construction.

Building Services

To develop introductory knowledge of the purpose, operating principles, coordination and legislative requirements to manage a range of services in small, medium and large buildings.

Construction for Small Buildings

To develop and apply knowledge, skills and understanding of foundation methods, non-specific and specific design structures, provision for services, building envelope and the interior for a small building.

Scoping and Preliminary Design

To enable the student to develop the skills and knowledge to establish client, site and regulatory requirements; to produce a preliminary architectural design from a construction brief.

To enable the student to develop the skills and knowledge to prepare location, assembly and component drawings; and schedules for a small building project.

DAT5.108

Construction for Medium and Large Buildings

To develop and apply knowledge, skills and understanding of foundation methods, structural systems, provision for services, building envelope and the interior for medium and large buildings.

DAT6.109

Contract Administration

To enable the student to develop and apply knowledge and skills to prepare and evaluate a tender; and complete post tender, construction and post-construction administration.

DAT6.110

Design in the Built Environment

To enable the student to apply and develop an understanding of factors relating to the design of construction projects including design principles, cultural differences, and the relationship between people and their built environment.

DAT6.111

Construction Detailing

To enable the student to demonstrate development of knowledge and skills involved in the interpretation and preparation of construction details.

DAT6.112

Documentation for Medium Buildings

To enable the student to develop skills and knowledge to prepare location, assembly and component drawings, schedules; and specifications for a medium building project.

DAT6.113

Construction Design Development

To enable the student to develop the skills and knowledge to prepare building proposals, building design drawings and associated approval documentation.


DAT6.114

Virtual Design and Construction

To enable the student to develop introductory skills and knowledge of the principles of building information modelling to establish design solutions.

DAT6.115

Construction Industry Project

To enable the student to conduct and present the findings of an investigation within the context of the construction industry.

 

Entry Requirements

  • a total of 60 NCEA credits at level 2 including 12 credits in Maths; OR
  • completion of an appropriate qualification at Level 4
  • Equivalent knowledge, skills, work experience or study.

Any applicants whose first language is not English may be required to provide evidence of an overall IELTS (Academic) band score of 6 (with no score below 5.5 in speaking, reading, writing and listening) or equivalent.

 

Special Admission

Applicants must have:

  • attained the age of 20 years on or before the first day of the semester in which study for the diploma is to commence; AND
  • have provided sufficient evidence of aptitude or appropriate work or other life experience that would indicate a successful outcome in the qualification.
