ARA

Ara Institute of Canterbury (often just called Ara) is a public institute of technology and polytechnic in the South Island of New Zealand, specialising in practical, career-focused education. Formed in 2016 through the merger of Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) and Aoraki Polytechnic, Ara continues a legacy of applied learning dating back to 1906.

 

Ara is NZQA Category 1 — the highest quality rating under New Zealand’s education quality system — and it serves a diverse student body, including over 1,000 international students from 50+ countries.

 

University Ranking & Recognition

Ara is not a traditional research university, so it doesn’t appear in global university rankings (like QS or THE). However:

  • It is nationally accredited and quality assured by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) as part of Te P?kenga | New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.

  • Classrooms are small with personalised learning and practical, work-ready focus.

  • Bachelor Degrees – Undergraduate programmes (Levels 7+)

  • Graduate & Postgraduate Qualifications – Advanced studies, master’s pathways (Level 8+)

  • Foundation & English Language Programmes – Pathway courses for academic and language skill building

Program

  • English

    Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4) Learn how to communicate confidently and effectively in academic situations. The New Zealand Certificates in English comprise of eight English language programmes from foundation through to advanced level. These programmes give you the language skills and knowledge useful for living and working in New Zealand. This programme enables you to communicate independently and effectively in familiar and some unfamiliar situations, with fluency and flexibility in academic English. This programme is full time and consists of 18 weeks (6 months) of intensive learning. Career opportunities Successful completion of this programme will give you the confidence to communicate effectively in the English language. Students may choose to study a workplace or professional qualifier, which may be used as evidence of English language level when seeking employment. Study pathways This certificate leads to further study at level 5. Once you complete this certificate (or at level 3 or above) you may meet the language requirements for other programmes of study.
