Whitireia & WelTec
Whitireia & WelTec is a leading vocational education provider in New Zealand offering industry-focused and practical qualifications. It is a division of Te P?kenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST), the national tertiary education network created to strengthen vocational education.
The two institutions — Whitireia (founded 1986) and WelTec (originating from historic technical schools) — operate jointly to provide students with a broad range of applied programmes across multiple study areas and levels.
University Ranking & Recognition
Whitireia & WelTec are not traditional research universities and therefore do not appear in global university league tables (e.g., QS or THE). However:
- They are nationally accredited and quality-assured by NZQA through their status as part of Te P?kenga.
- They are highly regarded for their vocational and practical education with strong industry links and support for student employment outcomes.

International Partnerships: They engage in global pathway and articulation programmes with partner institutions in countries including China, India, Sri Lanka and Russia — enabling students to start studies in their home country and finish in New Zealand.

English
New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Academic) (Level 4) This qualification is for learners of English as an additional language who want to understand, speak, read, and write English for further study. Improve your spoken and written English in an academic context. Develop your ability to read or listen to an academic text and communicate its meaning. Benefit from a social and supportive learning environment. What you will learn • Develop your ability to read academic texts and demonstrate understanding • Learn how to listen to an oral academic text, communicate its meaning and establish key points • Improve your spoken English by participating in moderately advanced academic conversations • Develop your written English and learn how to write detailed and well-developed academic texts This programme is delivered face-to-face. You will be required to attend four on-campus days a week. Learning materials to support in-class activities will be available via Moodle (our online learning platform), which will require you to have a computer and internet access at home. Entry requirements Successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in English Language Level 3 (Applied), or equivalent qualification or experience. International applicants are required to have an IELTS score of 5.5 (Academic) with no lower band score of 5.0 or equivalent, or an equivalent described in NZQA Rules.
