Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS)

Auckland Institute of Studies (AIS) is a privately owned, NZQA-approved tertiary education provider established in 1990. AIS offers applied, career-oriented programmes in business, hospitality, tourism, information technology and English language training, alongside postgraduate options such as Graduate Diplomas, Master’s degrees and an MBA. AIS describes itself as a multicultural, student-centred institute with a focus on practical skills and employability.

Why choose AIS? (what makes it attractive to international students)

  • Career-oriented programs: AIS focuses on practical, industry-relevant training (hospitality, tourism, business, IT) which helps with workplace readiness.

  • NZQA approval & Category 1 standing: AIS is NZQA-approved and is regarded among the privately owned NZ tertiary providers (Category 1 status cited by institutional listings). This gives assurance about quality and visa/immigration recognition.

  • Flexible study options: Daytime on-campus delivery plus online / offshore options let some international students start from home.

  • Student support & pastoral care: AIS provides international student services, orientation, accommodation support and awards (a multicultural campus environment).

Ranking / reputation (concise, realistic)

  • AIS does not appear in major global research rankings (QS or THE top global lists). That’s common for smaller, teaching-focused private institutions. Multiple education sites note AIS’s strengths are applied teaching and niche programmes rather than global research output.

  • More importantly for students: AIS is NZQA-approved and widely recognised for vocational & professional training in hospitality, tourism, business and IT. NZQA listings are the practical measure for international students.

Campus locations & contact (where you study)

  • St Helens Campus (main): 28a Linwood Avenue, Mt Albert, Auckland 1025.

  • Asquith Campus: 120 Asquith Avenue, Mt Albert, Auckland (a short walk from St Helens).

  • Postal / enquiries: PO Box 2995, Auckland 1140

Types of courses / study levels

AIS delivers a broad mix across these levels (NZQF framework):

  • English language programmes: General English, EAP (English for Academic Purposes), IELTS prep, CertTESOL teacher training.

  • Certificates & Diplomas (Levels 3–6): e.g., Diplomas in Hospitality, Tourism and Information Technology (practical pathway courses).

  • Bachelor degrees (Level 7): Bachelor of Business with streams (Accounting, Management, Tourism & Hospitality streams).

  • Graduate diplomas & Postgraduate degrees (Level 7/9): Graduate Diplomas, MBA, Master’s options (e.g., Master of Information Technology announced).

Mode of learning (onsite / e-learning / blended)

  • Onsite (face-to-face): most certificate, diploma and degree courses run during daytime hours Monday–Friday.

  • Online / offshore: AIS provides online/offshore study options for certificates, diplomas and some master’s programmes so students can begin from their home country. This is highlighted on the AIS site as a flexible route for international students.

  • Blended: many programmes offer blended approaches — practical on-campus workshops plus online coursework — depending on the programme and intake. (Refer to specific programme pages for exact delivery details.)

Number of programs offered (summary / scope)

  • AIS lists a wide programme catalog covering English, Business, Hospitality, Tourism and IT across certificate → diploma → bachelor → postgraduate levels.

Scholarships & financial support (what's available)

AIS publishes multiple scholarship options and occasional hardship funds: examples include:

  • AIS Scholarships (merit-based), Chairman’s Scholarships, Top-Up Scholarships, Women in IT Scholarships, M?ori scholarships, plus targeted community scholarships (e.g., GOPIO West Auckland).

  • COVID / Hardship Scholarships: AIS has previously run onshore international student hardship scholarships during exceptional periods.

  • Fees-Free eligibility: some NZ Government Fees-Free schemes may apply for eligible students (domestic criteria), so check eligibility if you have resident status.
Always check the AIS Scholarships page for deadlines, eligibility, and how to apply — scholarship availability and criteria change each year.

Highlights & strengths

  • Long-established (since 1990) private provider with a practical/applied focus.

  • Two closely located campuses in Mt Albert, central Auckland — good student life and transport links.

  • Strong, industry-linked programmes in hospitality & tourism (popular for students seeking work in NZ’s tourism sector).

  • Flexible study options: on-campus, blended and online/offshore starts for international students.
