Canterbury College is a private training establishment founded in 1988 that provides education of the highest quality in a supportive and professional environment. Our two multi-cultural, international campuses are located in Christchurch; one in Westfield Riccarton Mall and the other in the Central City.

The programme will enable learners to gain the general language skills required to participate with increasing independence and fluency in an academic English Language context. This qualification is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) Low B2. Completion of the programme and the award of the qualification will allow educational institutions to make informed judgements regarding the level at which the learner can use English in an academic context. Society in general is becoming more complex with increasing literacy and numeracy requirements. Strong literacy and numeracy skills equip employees to fully participate in the workplace, develop higher level technical skills and cope with rapidly changing workplace demands. Additionally, by enhancing literacy and numeracy skills, people are able to function capably in day to day activities using English, and participate actively in society. This ILN-ESOL course is designed for people from a migrant or refugee background who are pre-literate learners or learners who have very low levels of English language and literacy. Learning Chinese and Chinese culture is very useful for those who wish to work with Chinese or visit China for travel or business. Canterbury College’s Chinese course for beginners will provide students with the basics in Chinese language and culture. Chinese Language Why Study Chinese With Us? In this course the focus will be on equipping learners with a basic understanding of Mandarin and to be able to communicate verbally on daily living and familiar topics such as exchanging personal information, talking about daily arrangements and food, asking about price, introducing the city and weather, sharing interests, etc. Additionally, learners will be introduced to pinyin, the romanised system for transliterating Chinese. Selected topics and situations come from real-life scenarios and can be used for everyday communications. In additional to dialogues, the selection of reading material and practice activities will make the content as rich and varied as possible to stimulate learners’ interests. By the end of the course you’ll be able to use a range of expressions and phrases to initiate and respond to short, routine social interactions. No prior knowledge of the language or culture is required.
