    General English Overview Entry Requirements Sample Timetable Enrolment Details General English will help you improve your ability to communicate in English in social and work situations and progress to other ELA courses. The course focuses on the development of communication skills with a balance of speaking, listening, reading, and writing tasks. You will learn through class activities, individual, pair, and small group work. General English includes elective classes that allow you to tailor your course to meet your learning goals, as you can choose an elective class to focus on a particular subject or skill. The elective classes are dependent on the level and student demand. With the New Zealand border open and more and more students able to travel to study in person, ELA will return to delivering General English courses on campus (face-to-face) from 12th September 2022. As a result, our final intake for online General English (for individual students) will be 15th August 2022. Course Dates Fixed start dates apply. Electives General English includes elective classes that allow you to tailor your course to meet your learning goals, as you can choose an elective class to focus on a particular subject or skill. The elective classes are dependent on the level and student demand. They may include: Communication Skills, Business English and English for IELTS.* The English for IELTS elective focuses on language development, with competence in the four key IELTS test areas (writing, speaking, listening, and reading) developed during the course. This elective also builds awareness of the IELTS test format and provides practical exam skills and strategies. The Business English elective teaches a range of business communication skills, with a focus on practical language. Every few weeks the Business English class will take part in a project involving real-life business skills such as advertising, marketing, presenting, selling a product and writing a report. The Communication Skills elective focuses on developing functional listening, speaking and writing skills, covering the themes ‘Social and Travel’ and ‘Work and Study’.     Academic English Overview Online Course Entry requirements Sample Timetable Enrolment Details Academic English will help you improve your English language skills to prepare you for study success at university. This course provides you with opportunities to develop your independent learning strategies and individual needs in listening, speaking, reading and writing. This course has 4 levels: EAP Intro, EAP1, EAP 2, EAP3. Each level has two sessions of lessons every day as per below: EAP Intro : Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university study skills (session 2) EAP1: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2) EAP 2: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2) EAP3: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS or university preparation skills (session 2) If you wish to improve your IELTS band scores, you may choose: Academic English (session 1) + IELTS (session 2) Take an IELTS test upon completion of the course at ELA's official IELTS Test Centre.     English for Engineering Overview Entry Requirements Sample Timetable Enrolment Details English for Specific Academic Purposes (Engineering) is a 2 week online course. It is intended for learners of English who study Engineering at university and who want to develop their English skills for doing project work in groups, writing up reports and presenting the results of projects. The aim of this course is to develop students’ knowledge of language for interacting with others in group work, the genres of project reports and presentations. The course also seeks to extend students’ language skills in order to improve the accuracy of their writing and speaking. Classes will include: A wide range of online/offline learning interactions; discussion forums, pair and group work in ‘breakout rooms’, and shared document collaboration in small classes. Individualised tutoring and feedback on progress at different points of the course with easy access to virtual academic counselling by appointment. Modern and quality tested study platforms via Zoom and Canvas (our learning management system) to ensure a fully integrated learning experience. Insights into project management with guest speaker Professor Garry Miller from the Faculty of Engineering Learning Outcomes By the end of this course students will be able to: Use formulaic expressions for participating in a group project. Write an appropriately structured report for an engineering project. Deliver a clear group presentation about a project they have completed.     Business English Overview Entry requirements Sample Timetable Enrolment Details This 4-week Business English course will help you to increase your English language proficiency in order to gain confidence in your professional communication. The course will provide you with business language skills in order to participate with increasing independence and fluency in professional contexts in English. This could include: • Liaising over the telephone • Conducting professional presentations • Leading team and client meetings • Negotiating with colleagues • Discussing data and evaluating performance Emphasis is placed on essential employability skills; in particular, on the four main skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing, all from a business perspective. A strong focus is also placed on raising awareness of cultural differences in international business and how to manage these. Taking the Business English course at the ELA will ensure you obtain valuable skills specifically tailored to your background and level of experience. Lessons will be primarily classroom based, with online practice for every unit, supplemented with practical activities which could include a visit to the University of Auckland’s Business School, guest speakers from local industries and company visits.
